HADDONFIELD, N.J. -- On Aug. 4, the construction of the Hadrosaurus foulkii sculpture garden began with the demolition of more than 4,800 square feet of Lantern Lane's red brick walkway. Then the bulldozer arrived to begin the excavations necessary for installation of new electrical, water and related infrastructure systems.

New plumbing throughout the 209-foot-long Lane required a lot of engineering and just plain grunt work. A new irrigation system will automatically keep the garden areas watered while another system feeds the water feature that will cascade down the rocks around the dinosaur sculpture pedestal.

The sidewalk between Lantern Lane and the Kings Highway curb had to be completely torn out. The entire Lane was then refilled, leveled, compacted and otherwise prepared for its new paver surface and contoured garden zones.

Donated by the EP Henry Corporation, well over 4,000 large pavers were used by crews of McCrindle Paver Systems to execute the overall design laid out by the landscape architecture department of Knolltop Nursery.

Although HATCH made every effort to minimize disruption to nearby businesses, the Lane became a major construction site for several weeks. Once the new surface was installed, massive boulders that form the base of the dinosaur sculpture pedestal arrived and had to be wrestled into place.

The new gardens began to take shape by the last week of August as bamboo, magnolia, ginkgo, ferns and other plants went into the ground. By Sept. 4, the sculpture pedestal was complete enough for passersby to envision where a bronze Hadrosaurus foulkii will stand to be revealed at a dedication ceremony on Oct. 18.
